Advancements in technology, combined with the vast wealth of
information available via the internet, have proven to be
extremely valuable assets in the consideration of Thoroughbred
breeding. The great
breeders of yesteryear were remarkable, in that their breeding
decisions were based upon instincts and principles, and upon the
limited number of accurate statistics available to them. Breeders today
still adhere to their individual instincts and principles, but
also have at their fingertips access to accurate and timely
statistics, we well as opportunity to incorporate modern
technological advancements into their own breeding schemes. What follows
is just a sampling of theories and techniques currently in use.
Every theory represents a valid point, but must
be considered a singular piece of the overall plan.

The X-Factor

A large heart can enhance the performance
of an athlete. The "X-Factor" theory suggests that the large
heart is an inherited trait, passed on through female genes
only.

Dosage

Frenchman Lt. Col. J. J. Vuillier
originated the theory of Dosage in the early 20th century. The
theory was modified years later by Italian Dr. Franco Varola.
In the early 1980s, Dr. Steven A. Roman began to combine the two
theories, and thus formulated the modern Dosage theory.

Equix
Biomechanics

Analyses of potential racehorses and
breeding stock are based upon physical measurements and angles,
and include cardiovascular data collected by ultrasound
examination. Very interesting approach.
